Filmmakers and photographers debate on how the peripheries build their own image

The cinematographic and photographic production of and on the peripheries of the Brazilian metropolises will be discussed at the meeting "When the Peripheries Build Their Own Image," on November 27, at 2:00 pm, at the IEA. The event is the fourth of the cycle "Peripheral Centralities," an achievement of the Olavo Setúbal Chair in Art, Culture and Science, coordinated by social, cultural and educational activist Eliana Sousa Silva, also the current chairholder. There will be five presenters: theatrical director, documentary filmmaker and writer Marcus Faustini; filmmaker Jeferson De; photographer João Roberto Ripper; filmmaker Thais Scabio; and photographer Bira Carvalho.

IEA and Itaú Cultural hold a seminar on the advances and impacts of artificial intelligence

The advance of artificial intelligence (AI) brings situations to everyday life that once looked like fiction. The possibilities and challenges of this technology will be the subject of the seminar "The Machine, Intelligence and Disinteligence: Utopia and Entropy in Sight," promoted by the IEA and Itaú Cultural on November 21, 22 and 23. Divided into thematic panels, the event will discuss the presence of AI in biology, medicine, culture, law and the future of computing. There will also be conferences with two prominent speakers: Michael Resch, director of the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart, University of Stuttgart, and Anders Sandberg, from the Future of Humanity Institute, University of Oxford.

Researchers analyze a warning from the Catholic Church on environmental degradation

The Laudato Si' encyclical has been the first public manifestation of the Catholic Church on consumerism, environmental degradation and climate change. It will be addressed by sociologist Ricardo Abramovay at the meeting "Religions & the Anthropocene: The Case of Catholicism." The event will take place on November 21, from 3:00 pm, and will be moderated and coordinated by José Eli da Veiga, with comments by anthropologist Paola Montero.

Event discusses the environmental impact of a future logistics center in Paranapiacaba

Representatives of academia, the government and residents of the Paranapiacaba village, located in the municipality of Santo André, will participate in the meeting "SOS Paranapiacaba - Conflicts, Knowledge and Development Possibilities in the São Paulo Macrometropolis," to be held on November 22, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the IEA. The objective is to discuss the environmental risks of the creation of an on-site logistics complex, which is already being licensed by the São Paulo State Sanitation Technology Company (CETESB).

Seminar discusses the social engagement for ecosystem preservation

In order to discuss the creation and disappearance of social energy for sustainable human-nature relations in coastal and marine environments, IEA's Environment and Society Research Group will hold the event "Of Systems, Networks and People: Social Energy for the Self-organization of Sustainable Human-nature Relations" on November 26, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The conferencist will be Marion Glaser, who heads the Social-Ecological Systems (SES) Analysis Work Group at the ZMT Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Research and teaches at the University of Bremen.

Memory

Meeting highlights community and social relations of immigrants in Brazil

Reports on community belonging experiences by immigrants who have settled in Brazil and built social networks will be presented at a meeting on November 26, at 2:00 pm, at the IEA. The seminar "Immigration Memories and Ties of Belonging" will bring together immigrants and / or their descendants, as well as researchers from the area, with the objective of highlighting the existence of relational subjects in the Brazilian society, who represent significant cultural and political actors and interlocutors.

Conference addresses the cinematographic production of Benedito Junqueira Duarte in science and health

Historian Márcia Regina Barros da Silva, from USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH), will be at the conference "Images of Health and Science in São Paulo in the Production of Benedito Junqueira Duarte" on November 27, at 10:00 am, to discuss the importance of Duarte's work for the joint analysis of science and society in the history of health and medicine in the city of São Paulo. The event has been organized by the IEA's Research Group Khronos: History of Science, Epistemology and Medicine.
