Highlights of IEA's 35-year history

An analysis by Immanuel Wallerstein on the meaning of the Twin Towers and their destruction

A year after the Al-Qaeda attacks on September 11, 2001, issue #46 of IEA's journal "Estudos Avançados" published a dossier on the United States. One of the highlights was the article "The United States and the World: The Twin Towers as a Metaphor," by sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein (1930-2019). Known as the "world-systems' theorist," he argued that the Twin Towers constituted a perfect metaphor for the Americans' view that the US "are more cosmopolitan from their perspective" as they "pointed to limitless aspirations, announced great technological achievements, and were a beacon to the world." However, the towers were also a metaphor for the attack on the US: "built with remarkable skill... a technology [which] turned out to be a rather imperfect protective shield." The third metaphor associated with the towers, according to him, was the fact that it has been a choice to build them: "Will we manage to maintain our moral posture in the face of the uncertainty of knowing that the world we have created to this day is just one among thousands of alternative worlds that we could have created? And that the world we will be creating in the next 30 to 50 years may or may not be better? That it may or may not reduce the contradiction between our ideals and our privileges?"
