Meeting brings together French and Brazilian experts to discuss fixed book prices

40 years ago, the so-called Lang Law established a fixed price for books sold in France and limited discounts on them. The debate on this issue now affects professionals in the sector and, especially, the readership in Brazil. However, it is necessary to shed light on the unequal conditions of production, trade, and distribution of books in an unequal country with continental dimensions, argue the organizers of the meeting "For a Law of Bibliodiversity," which takes place from October 13 to 15, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Jack Lang, former Minister of Culture in France who has implemented the aforementioned Law, will be among the participants.

COLLECTION

Highlights of IEA's 35-year history

100 years of Paulo Freire

Paulo Freire, the Patron of Brazilian Education and one of the most influential pedagogues in the world, died in 1997. On September 19, the centenary of his birth was celebrated. In honor of the author of "Pedagogy of the Oppressed," it is worth recalling some of his ideas for the construction of a democratic and popular school as exposed in "Letter to the Teachers" (Portuguese only), published in issue #42 of IEA's journal "Estudos Avançados," in 2001. Originally, the letter was published in "Professora, Sim; Tia, Não – Cartas a Quem Ousa Ensinar," a book written by Freire in 1993, shortly after his tenure as Secretary of Education for the city of São Paulo.
