OSCAR SALA CHAIR

Virgílio Almeida, new holder of the Oscar Sala Chair, will research human-algorithm interaction

On April 25, at 2:30 pm, computer scientist Virgílio Almeida, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG,) will take office as the new holder of the Oscar Sala Chair, succeeding semiotician Lucia Santaella. He will develop the project Human-Algorithm Interactions. For Almeida, understanding the social, political, and economic impacts of algorithms, whether positive or negative, is a research challenge and a relevant topic for the construction of governance mechanisms and public policies.

Book analyzes academic freedom from a legal point of view

Nina Ranieri, from the State Law Department of USP's Faculty of Law and a member of IEA's Board, and Angela Limongi, from the same department, are the organizers of "Academic Freedom: Legal Aspects in Comparative Perspective," an ebook launched in March. For Ranieri, the foundations of academic freedom in Brazil are under tension due to ideological, financial, and institutional conflicts, but "its importance and normative force have been confirmed in most situations in which they have been tested."

Podcast debates literary narratives about the Brazilian family

The first episode of the podcast “Fables of the Brazilian Family" is already on Spotify (Portuguese only.) Still to be launched, there are other 11 stories written by students of the cultural diffusion course "Family Figurations in Brazilian Literature of the 20th Century," taught by Professor Belinda Mandelbaum in 2020, during her participation in IEA’s Sabbatical Year Program. The expectation is that the podcast, as well as the texts and artistic productions, will allow the "creation of a multifaceted panorama built from multiple perspectives on the Brazilian family in contemporary times."

Nina Ranieri and Luciana Santos Barbosa are the new members of IEA's Board

At the end of February, Dean Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Jr. appointed Professor Nina Ranieri, from USP's Faculty of Law, to integrate the Institute's Board for two years. Ranieri has already participated in several activities of the IEA and is a member of USP's Center for Public Policy Research (NUPPs,) based at the Institute. Also in February, the representation of USP postgraduate students chose doctoral student Luciana Santos Barbosa for the vacancy intended for a member of the student body of the University.

April 20, at 2:00 pm - CREN Project "Cultivating Horizons:" Education in Particularly Challenging Brazilian Contexts
