OLAVO SETUBAL CHAIR

Olavo Setubal Chair launches a collection of books on the activities of the first five years

The István Jancsó Auditorium of USP's Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library will host the launch of a book collection about the activities of the first five years of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science, a partnership between the IEA and Itaú Cultural. The activity will take place this Friday, May 6, at 2:00 pm. In-person participation will be open to the public upon prior registration and proof of vaccination against COVID-19. The chair holders of the covered period were Sérgio Paulo Rouanet (2016), Ricardo Ohtake (2017), Eliana Sousa Silva (2018), and the duo Helena Nader and Paulo Herkenhoff (2019). Together, they have gathered a total of 130 guests by coordinating conferences, seminars, and roundtables.

HIGHLIGHTS

Publication addresses legal solutions adopted to stimulate innovation

The Legal Center of the Innovation and Competitiveness Observatory will launch the third volume of the series "Cadernos de Direito e Inovação" on May 13, at 2:00 pm. Under the theme "Legal Solutions for Innovation," the ebook contains 13 chapters written by 40 authors and has been edited by the IEA. It is a selection of articles on specific cases in which innovation legislation has been successfully used. The texts not only reveal the use of legislation, but also report the challenges experienced by the actors themselves in the development and implementation of the legal solution found.

COURSE

Course on art forms from the Belle-Époque to the 1920s is open for enrollment

IEA's Brazil-France Research Group will hold the course "Paris: Life, Literature, and Artistic Forms from the Belle-Époque to the 1920s" from May 17 to June 9. The course is free and will be taught online through the Zoom platform. Interested parties must apply through USP's Apolo System by May 5. The 100 vacancies will be filled in order of registration or by lottery if the number of applicants exceeds 100. The course will be held in Portuguese with the exception of the first class, by Professor Laurence Campa, from the Paris Nanterre University, who will give her presentation in French (no translation).

NEW CHAIR HOLDER

Virgílio Almeida reinforces the importance of transdisciplinary studies in the new digital order

Human-Algorithm Interactions is the subject of the project by computer scientist Virgílio Almeida, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), as the new holder of the Oscar Sala Chair. He took office on April 25, during a ceremony held in USP's Council Room. The emphasis of the project will be the transdisciplinary study of algorithms and intelligent machines, "not as engineering and computing artifacts, but as a class of actors that present particular patterns of behavior when interacting with humans," said the professor.

MAKEOVER

IEA's São Carlos Center resumes activities after the renovation of its facilities

Completely renovated in its interior space, IEA's center in São Carlos resumed its activities on April 18 with a meeting between the coordinators of the working groups. The works carried out in the last two years were mainly aimed at restructuring and adapting the internal facilities, now in adequate conditions for researchers, professors, and students to develop their projects. During this period, new working groups have also been created or reactivated. They are the main platforms for the IEA to act.

May 10, at 5:00 pm - To Induce Innovation

Journalist Karita Sena, from the Brazilian Post and Telegraph Corporation (Correios), will be the presenter of this meeting, which will explore the needs of Brazil to clearly define objectives and resources for innovation programs. Watch live.
