Néstor Canclini coordinates a book on transformations in cultural institutions and policies in Brazil and Mexico

The book "Cultural Emergencies – Institutions, Creators, and Communities in Brazil and Mexico," a publication launched in June by the IEA and USP's press (EDUSP), analyzes the changes that have occurred in recent decades in the relationships between cultural institutions, artists, other cultural workers, and publics of Latin America, having the Brazilian and Mexican panoramas as references. The work is coordinated by cultural anthropologist Néstor García Canclini. The other authors are postdoctoral fellows Sharine Melo and Juan Brizuela, and social anthropologist Mariana Martínez. REPORT

Indigenous museums: the necessary decolonisation in Japan and the emergence in Brazil

Contrary to a certain cult of a pretense of ethnic homogeneity throughout its history, Japan is now seeking to demonstrate to the world that it is a diverse country, using the appreciation of the indigenous Ainu culture as one of its resources. One of the initiatives was the inauguration of the National Ainu Museum and Park in Hokkaido three years ago. Sociologist Mariko Murata, from Kansai University, spoke about the difficulties of this process at the seminar "Decolonising Museums and Exhibitions on the Indigenous Ainu in Japan," on May 29. The meeting also discussed museum initiatives by Brazilian indigenous peoples (Kaingangs and Kanindés) and the Emanoel Araújo Afro Brasil Museum.
