"Estudos Avançados" #110 dedicates its main dossier to the impacts of digital technology on society

The dossier “Human Implications of Technosciences,” present in issue #110 of IEA's journal, analyzes "the old dilemmas between the positive or perverse effects of the use of technology in all fields of social existence," according to sociologist Sérgio Adorno, editor of the publication. The issue, launched this month, contains three other sections with articles on literary criticism, gender issues, human evolution, memories of the History course at USP, the small number of conservative academics in the USA, and reviews of four books.

USP Global Cities will select a postdoctoral fellow to conduct research on São José dos Campos

USP's Global Cities Synthesis Center will receive applications from those interested in participating in the selection of a researcher for a postdoctoral fellowship until May 7. The scholarship recipient will support the work of researchers from the Sustainable Municipalities Program. The value of the monthly scholarship is R$ 5,200.00 for a period of 10 months, with resources coming from an agreement signed with the City Hall of São José dos Campos (São Paulo), and with the Technological Park Association of São José dos Campos. The selection will take into account the academic performance and scientific production of the candidates in the areas of planning (urban, regional, or territorial), architecture and urbanism, environmental sciences, and engineering, among others.

Bernardete Gatti is the new holder of the Alfredo Bosi Chair of Basic Education

On April 22, educator Bernardete Gatti was sworn in as the new holder of the Alfredo Bosi Chair of Basic Education during a ceremony in the University Council Room at USP. Her predecessor was epidemiologist Naomar de Almeida Filho, from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Gatti is a collaborating researcher at the Carlos Chegas Foundation and dean of the Higher Education Chamber of the São Paulo State Education Council. She also works on the project Scenarios for Teacher Training in Brazil and its Challenges, funded by UNESCO.

RESEARCH

On a mission in Romania, Brazilian researchers search for the last Neanderthals

Brazilian and Romanian experts are currently carrying out research in the Varghis Gorge, located in the Carpathians, in search of fossils of the last Neanderthals and the first Homo sapiens. Among the Brazilians are paleoanthropologist Walter Neves, a senior professor at the IEA, where he coordinates the Center for Research and Dissemination in Human Evolution, and other researchers from USP and the São Paulo State University (UNESP). This first visit to Romania involves meetings with local researchers, institutional discussions, and a search for potential sites of interest.

Cities with media training and health are the themes of a new center and groups

At the end of March, IEA's Board approved the creation of a center and two research groups. The International Center for Innovation and Development of MIL Cities (CIIDCMIL) is dedicated to research on media and information training in cities. The Women's Health Study Group will implement an observatory for mapping and processing data to support managers in decision-making. Investigating the potential of certain foods native to Brazil is the objective of the Research Group Food, Nutrition, and Mental Health.

This meeting will have the participation of two biologists: Gustavo Maia Souza, from the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPEL), will be interviewed by Marcos Buckeridge (IEA and USP's Institute of Biosciences). May 14, at 7:00 pm - Education and Work: New Concepts

A mini-course with educator Francisco Aparecido Cordão and promoted by the Alfredo Bosi Chair of Basic Education. Participation is open to the public and free without prior registration needed. The channel of the Chair on YouTube will offer the live transmission.

May 15, at 10:00 am - The Dissemination of the 2030 Agenda in Brazil and the Challenges for the Governance of Sustainable Development

A roundtable on the book "Non-State Actors and Sustainable Development in Brazil," by sociologist Eduardo Gonçalves Gresse, will address the role of non-state actors in promoting the SDGs of the UN 2030 Agenda. Watch live.

May 16, at 2:00 pm - Advances in Wind Energy from Free Energy Market Dynamics

This seminar, as part of the cycle Dialogues for the Future: Energy Transition and SDG 7, will address the latest advances and growth in wind energy in Brazil, considering technological and market challenges. Watch live.

An event of the cycle UrbanSus (Urban Sustainability) that will debate the importance of food systems as levers to optimize environmental sustainability and human health. Watch live.

In this further meeting of the second season of the series, innovation management specialist Guilherme Ary Plonski (a senior professor and former director of the IEA) will be interviewed by agronomist Sandro Schlindwein, from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). Watch live.
