Education

Education experts discuss the quality of basic education in Brazil

The quality and main challenges of public basic education will be discussed at the IEA on October 9, from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. Organized by the 'Brazilian Public Basic Education Study Group: Apparent Difficulties, Actual Challenges', the event will take place in the former Room of the University Council, with a live webcast. In the morning, the speakers will be Guiomar de Mello, former Secretary of Education of São Paulo, and Luís Carlos Menezes, a member of the State Council of Education in São Paulo and a consultant to UNESCO for curricular proposals. In the afternoon, the panel will have José Nalini, St ate Secretary of Education of São Paulo, and Nilson Machado, coordinator of the Study Group.

Politics

Analysts discuss political turbulences in Latin America and Europe, and their impact on democracy

The crisis of democracy will be the theme of an event on October 10 and 11. 'Democracies in Crisis? European and Latin American Experiences' will begin with a talkshow to discuss experiences in Europe and Latin America, at 7.00 pm, at Goethe-Institut. The next day, at 9.00 am, at the IEA, the debate will address what a crisis of democracy is; and the variants and causes of the crisis according to Brazilian, European and Latin American experiences. The organization is from the Martius Chair of German and European Studies, of Goethe-Institut São Paulo's Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), and IEA's Research Group Quality of Democracy. The events will be held in English with simultaneous translation to Portuguese and live webcasting on the second day.

Culture

A series of seminars about institutions, cultural leaders and exhibitions of the visual arts

From August to November, the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture and Science is holding the cycle Culture, Institutionality and Management, with meetings focused on the main Brazilian cultural institutions, cultural managers and exhibitions that formed the scenario of the visual arts of the country from 1949 to 2015. The exhibitors are leaders, researchers and artists. The six seminars that have already been held included five institutions (Afro Brazil Museum, SESC São Paulo, Bienal, MASP and Itaú Cultural) and four directors (Ricardo Ohtake, Ariano Suassuna, Walter Zanini and Paulo Emílio Salles Gomes). The next meeting will be on October 10, at 2.30 pm, at the Biennial Pavilion, and will address the experience as cultural managers of Paulo Herkenhoff, curr ently the cultural director of the Rio Art Museum (MAR), and Carlos Augusto Calil, former Municipal Secretary of Culture of São Paulo who has directed several institutions.

Hélio Oiticica's work is the theme of seminar and dossier of the 'Ars' Journal

A representative of the Brazilian artistic avant-garde of the 1960s and 1970s, Hélio Oiticica will be the theme of a seminar at the IEA in order to discuss "the growth of his critical fortune", as well as the realization of new curatorial and editorial experiences that have occurred in the last decade. On the same day, a dossier on Oiticica will be launched in the journal 'Ars', a four-month publication of the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts of USP's School of Communications and Arts (ECA). The event will take place in the former Room of the University Council, with live transmission, on October 25, 26 and 2 7, starting daily at 10.00 am.

DOCUMENTARY

The IEA and USP's School of Medicine launch a documentary on mobility difficulties in the surroundings of Hospital das Clínicas (HC)

The access to the largest hospital complex in Latin America, the HC, which belongs to the University of São Paulo, was documented in a film produced by students and the staff of the IEA, USP's School of Medicine (FM) and HC. ''Dis'Mobilidade Urbana' shows the difficulties of mobility and transportation that surround the HC, and how they affect patients, especially those with reduced mobility. The documentary was released on September 20, at FM, and re-released on the 23rd at Cinearte, in the Conjunto Nacional, closing the programme of 'Virada da Mobilidade'. The film is available on YouTube.

RESEARCH

IEA Sabbatical Year Program has defined researchers for 2018

The group of USP professors participating in the IEA's Sabbatical Year Program in 2018 is already defined. There will be six professors in total, five with one-year projects and one with a six-month project. The names were announced on September 30 in the Official State Gazette. After analyzing the projects of 14 candidates, the Board of the IEA selected researchers from the following fields of knowledge: archeology; performing arts and fashion; history; administration and innovation; law and public policy; and education.
