MOOC

Intercontinental Academia launches online course on "Time"

The massive open online course (MOOC) "Off the Clock: The Many Faces of Time," produced by the IEA in partnership with Nagoya University's Institute for Advanced Research (IAR), is already available on the Coursera platform. It is the result of debates undertaken by 13 young researchers from various fields and several countries participating in the first edition of the Intercontinental Academia (ICA), a project of the network UBIAS (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study).

CHAIR

Lucia Santaella is the first holder of the Oscar Sala Chair

Semiotician Lucia Santaella took office on April 16 as the first holder of the Oscar Sala Chair. She lectures in the Graduate Program in Communication and Semiotics, and coordinates the Graduate Program in Intelligence Technologies and Digital Design at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). The Chair is a partnership between the IEA and the “Ponto BR” Information and Coordination Center (NIC.br) under an agreement between USP and the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br).

José Teixeira Coelho Netto becomes a senior professor at the IEA

Professor emeritus from the School of Communications and Arts (ECA-USP) and former director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC-USP), José Teixeira Coelho Netto is now a senior professor at the IEA, where he coordinates the Study Group on Computational Cultures and Humanities. He will continue his research on electronic-based culture (eCulture), adding new work to be conducted with the High Performance Computing Center (HLRS) at the University of Stuttgart.

IEA has two new Board members

José Eduardo Krieger, a professor at USP’s Medical School (FM), and Henrique Araujo Aragusuku, a doctoral student at the Institute of Psychology (IP-USP), are the new members of IEA's Board. Former Provost of Research, Krieger has been nominated by the University Council (CO) for the position previously filled by sociologist Sérgio Adorno. Aragusuku has been chosen by the representation of graduate students in the CO to succeed Michel Kurdoglian Lutaif.

The losses of Alfredo Bosi and Neli Aparecida Mello-Théry

The IEA and the USP communities mourned two significant losses in April. On the 7th, historian and critic of Brazilian literature Alfredo Bosi died in São Paulo at the age of 84. He was a former director at the IEA and editor of the journal “Estudos Avançados.” On the 6th, Neli Aparecida Mello-Théry died in Paris at the age of 65. She was a professor at USP’s School of Arts, Sciences, and Humanities (EACH) and coordinated IEA's Research Group on Public Policy, Territoriality, and Society.

April 23, 2:00 pm – Environmental-Urban Dilemmas in Two Latin American Metropolises: São Paulo and Mexico City in the 21st Century

Online meeting with presentations by Mario Bassols and Miriam Alfie, both from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) in Mexico. The activity has been organized by IEA’s Environment and Society Research Group in partnership with UAM, USP’s Institute of Energy and Enviroment (IEE), and the Graduate Program in Territorial Planning and Management of the Federal University of ABC (PGT-UFABC).

April 25-30, 8:30 am – 2021 Planetary Health Annual Meeting (PHAM)

In the fourth edition of the meeting, the “São Paulo Declaration of Planetary Health” will be launched. The organizers are IEA’s Planetary Health Study Group, USP's Dean of Research, and the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA). Registrations are open until the day of the event.

April 27-29, 10:00 am – Cipher Baroque - The Implicit, the Disguised, and the Invisible in the Arts of Colonial America

This webinar is an initiative of the Young Investigators Grants Program of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) developed at USP’s Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU), and IEA’s Research Group on Time, Memory, and Belonging.

May 4, 2:00 pm – Agribusiness and Sustainability

Online meeting of the UrbanSus Cycle, linked to the USP Global Cities Synthesis Center, in partnership with the School of Public Health (FSP-USP). On the occasion, a book organized by Cleverson Andrioli and Arlindo Philippi Jr. will be released.
