"Estudos Avançados" #107 analyzes inequalities based on urban infrastructure

The digital version of the latest issue of IEA's journal is now available on the SciELO platform, bringing a set of studies on topics such as access to water, waste management, and social life related to cycle paths. For Sérgio Adorno, editor of the journal, the dossier explores the new dimensions of social inequalities, "as well as once again highlighting the strangulation of urban policies implemented by different government administrations." The publication also has reviews of six books and various texts on education, culture, and history of science. The article by Márcia Machado on the work of literary critic Antonio Candido stands out.

Gender equality, education in the pandemic, and nutrition and poverty are themes of three new books launched by the IEA

The IEA released three new books this month, all available for free download. "Education with Gender Equality for Children and Adolescents - A Practical Guide for Educators" is in its 3rd edition and is organized by Rosa Ester Rossini, Rochelle Saidel, and Sonia Alves Calió." (Post-)Pandemic Educational Rationalities – 2020 Atlas," by Julio Groppa Aquino, is the first of three volumes that the professor will publish as a result of his research conducted in IEA’s Sabbatical Year Program. To help analyzing the transformations in education during the pandemic, it presents 1,500 excerpts from 231 articles, organized into 100 entries. "Dialogues on Nutrition and Poverty: 20 Years of Integration between Research, Service, and Public Policy" brings together the production of IEA's Nutrition and Poverty Research Group throughout its 20 years of existence.

Ayrton Senna Institute Chair will discuss the role of assessment in Brazilian education

The Ayrton Senna Institute Chair for Innovation in Educational Assessment, based at the IEA center in Ribeirão Preto, was officially launched on March 10. In partnership with the Ayrton Senna Institute, it will discuss the role of assessment in the Brazilian educational system, promote research on the subject, articulate efforts, and propose improvements based on evidence with the aim of guiding public policies in the field of education. The initial duration will be of four years, with sociologist and political scientist Maria Helena Guimarães de Castro as first chair holder.

New student representative joins IEA's Board

PhD student Sandra Regina Ramos Braz is the new student representative of IEA's Board, succeeding graduate student Luciana Santos Barbosa. She will have a one-year term starting March 13 and already participated in a meeting held on March 15. A psychologist by training, Braz is taking the Graduate Program for Social Change and Political Participation (ProMuspp) from USP's School of Arts, Sciences, and Humanities (EACH).

The challenges of ChatGPT to teaching and research

In view of the impacts that language models will have on teaching and research, the IEA held the seminar "ChatGPT: Potential, Limits, and Implications for the University" on March 21. It has been the beginning of a series of debates for the elaboration of proposals that will guide the President's Office at USP to define guidelines and norms to assure the proper and ethical use of tools such as ChatGPT. Researchers from the areas of computing, sociology, engineering, law, innovation, and education have participated in addition to directors of the University's units and faculties, and a representative of the Ministry of Education (MEC) in Brazil.

March 31, at 2:00 pm - Solar Heating Systems in Brazil

This seminar aims to present systems that take advantage of solar energy for heating at different temperature levels, evaluating their pros and cons for application in Brazil. Watch live.

April 13, at 11:00 am - Who Invented the Wireless Communication?

An event that will address the journey of the first man to make voice and music communication at a distance through radio waves. Roberto Landell de Moura, a Brazilian scientist and priest, has invented the radio and designed the TV without any support for his projects. Watch live.

April 13, at 3:00 pm - Humanities in the face of the Anthropocene (First Conversation)

This meeting intends to discuss the need for decarbonization and prospects for mobility with low carbon content in Brazil, considering options such as electric and hybrid vehicles, biofuel and hydrogen vehicles, among others. Watch live.

April 14, at 2:00 pm - Launch of the book "O Ambiente Escolar em Transformação" (or "The School Environment in Transformation")

The publication brings together the works presented at an event held at the IEA in 2021, when researchers from different areas of knowledge, market professionals, and basic education students reflected on the school as an environment destined to the formation of the new generations in the contemporaneity. In-person event at USP's School of Education.

April 18, at 10:00 am -Water Conference: a Critical Balance

This seminar will discuss the results of the conference held by the UN in March of this year, and its impacts on Brazil. The meeting has addressed topics such as the Human Right to water and sanitation, climate change and water security, transboundary waters, and nature-based solutions. Watch live.
