Junior Anniversary Fellowship 2020-21
IASH is delighted to offer a ten-month Fellowship for the most promising early-career scholar in the arts, humanities and social sciences. For 2020-21, they seek applications centred on the place of the humanities in the 21st century to take forward inquiry in a cross-disciplinary way, perhaps at the outermost boundaries of the humanities, arts and social sciences. £15,000 bursary available, plus travel grants.

Digital Scholarship Postdoctoral Fellowships 2020-21
These Visiting Fellowships of between three and six months are intended to encourage outstanding digitally-focused, interdisciplinary research, international scholarly collaboration, and networking activities with a specific focus on the digital. £7,800 bursary available.

Library Fellowships 2020-21
Applications are invited for three- to six-month Library Fellowships from postdoctoral scholars in any area of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, to examine special collections held at the University of Edinburgh. The collections include archives, manuscripts, rare books, art, musical instruments and other museum collections, many of which have either not been catalogued or not fully researched, presenting novel opportunities to a wide range of scholarly disciplines. Topics for 2020-21 can include the Scottish Session Papers, archives of Thomas Nelson or Arthur Koestler, Middle Eastern manuscripts or the Malawi collections. £7,800 bursary available, plus travel grants.

IASH-CTPI Duncan Forrester Fellowship in public theology 2020-21
Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Fellowships lasting up to ten months from researchers working in any of the research areas of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues. The applicant’s project must relate broadly to public theology, in relation to areas such as: peacebuilding and the arts; theology, politics, and migration; theology and environmental ethics; and theology, law and justice. £13,000 bursary available.

This three-month Fellowship is intended to encourage outstanding early-career interdisciplinary research and scholarly collaboration in the broad field of modern and contemporary history. The CSMCH has selected an interdisciplinary research theme for this year (details on website), which applicants must address. Otherwise, there is no limit on geographical area or time period, as long as the bulk of research falls within the 'modern and contemporary' period (c.1750-present). £3,300 bursary available, plus travel grants.

The Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) is dedicated to research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with ‘Sustainable Governance’ as its central topic. More specific sub-topics under this umbrella prominently include sustainable democracy, sustainable peace and conflict management and environmental transformation as well as migration and displacement, restitution of cultural objects, and human rights research. Overarching aims of MIASA are working towards a reduction of global asymmetries in knowledge production and bridging the cultural divide between anglophone and francophone Africa. MIASA, established in 2018, serves as a hub for exchange, networking and collaboration amongst leading researchers from Germany, Ghana, the African and European continents and beyond. It is located on the beautiful campus of the University of Ghana at Legon (Accra).
The Institute offers time and space for supporting innovative academic projects in the Humanities and Social Sciences of top international quality. MIASA supports these projects via different kinds of fellowships: individual fellowships, tandem fellowships with one tandem partner from Germany and the other from West Africa, and fellowships as members of so- called Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups. From 2021 until 2026, MIASA will grant some 20 fellowships per year in total.
Present calls:
Five individual fellowships of 3 to 5 months duration in the calendar year 2021
Individual fellowships will allow researchers to conduct a project of their own choice. These projects can be of an opening, continuing, or closing nature. The successful applicants will become MIASA Fellows with all the corresponding rights and obligations for the agreed fellowship period. Key among the obligations is that MIASA fellows are required to spend the bulk of their fellowship in residence at MIASA at the University of Ghana.

Two tandem fellowships (3-5 months) in the calendar year 2021
The fellowships will allow the researchers who are teaming up to pursue a joint academic project. This project can be of an opening, continuing, or closing nature. Two researchers – one from West Africa and one from Germany – will work in a collaborative manner on a particular research topic in the Humanities and Social Sciences, addressing in one way or another MIASA’s overarching aims.

Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups (IFGs) in the calendar year 2021
IFGs are MIASA’s central instrument fostering original research of top-class international calibre on the central topic ‘Sustainable Governance’ and its sub-topics. In 2021, MIASA will fund one IFG from February 1 until May 31, and another one from September 1 until December 2021. An IFG brings together a group of up to six fellows for a duration of four months.

The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg in conjunction with the International Balzan Prize Foundation offers up to four 6-month Junior Fellowships in Global History in the academic year 2020/21. The fellowships are funded from the Balzan Prize awarded to Professor Jürgen Osterhammel by the Fondazione Internazionale Premio Balzan. They are addressed to scholars preparing a post-doctoral research monograph on a global history topic. Fellows will join the multidisciplinary community at FRIAS and will have full access to the facilities and activities at the Institute.
University of Konstanz, Germany

Research Visits at the Zukunftskolleg support temporary research stays up to three months by international early career researchers from partner research institutions and from within the network of University-based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS).
The aim of the Research Visits is to provide an opportunity to engage in a research project at the University of Konstanz, ideally in collaboration with a Zukunftskolleg fellow.
No limitation is placed on the area of research within the humanities, natural and social sciences. Interdepartmental and interdisciplinary study is encouraged.
Visiting researchers receive a working space in the Zukunftskolleg with all the usual research facilities and are expected to participate in all the Zukunftskolleg’s activities. Experimental projects in the natural sciences can only be supported if arrangements for lab space are made with the respective departments, since the Zukunftskolleg does not have any laboratory space of its own.
Funding will include round trip travel to Konstanz and up to EUR 800 per month toward accommodation in Konstanz. The Zukunftskolleg will not offer employment contracts for Research Visits.

The Zukunftskolleg is an Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Konstanz for the promotion of outstanding early career researchers in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. It forms a platform for interdisciplinary discourse between researchers in Germany and abroad, and provides them with resources for obtaining extramural funding. Researchers at the Zukunftskolleg perform research without administrative constraints and have the freedom to engage in meaningful exchange with other up-and-coming colleagues and with distinguished senior researchers.
Up to 5 (post-)doctoral stipends are available for up to 3 months (with justification for up to 4 months) and are based at the Zukunftskolleg. The start date is between September 1st, 2020 and October 1st, 2020. Deadline for applications is 28 February 2020. The Zukunftskolleg Konnect Fellowships support early career researchers from Africa, Asia and Latin America related to one of the thirteen departments of the University of Konstanz. As ZUKOnnect Fellow, you can use this time to extend your research networks and to get to know the research environment at the University of Konstanz, without losing your ties to your home university. As these fellowships can build a first bridge to the German and European academic system, we also encourage doctoral students in their last year to apply. The Zukunftskolleg will not offer employment contracts for ZUKOnnect Fellows.
