— por Aziz Salem — última modificação 18/09/2019 22:54Birth and myth: A reflection on temporality. This reflection was originally presented over 25 years ago. It is, therefore, dated, and shows the marks both of permanence and of obsolescence. Like everything else, it has been subject to the effects of time. The text relates the evolvement of “self-consciousness” to the oedipal development and to the perception of time. It examines the assumptions underlying the appropriation, by a subject, of the historicity of his or her life. It considers that this uniquely psychoanalytical theme is a feature of modernity and, in order to better understand it, it also surveys the issue from a philosophical and aesthetic angle. Examples of literary treatments of the awareness of temporality (Lampedusa and T. Mann) are given. The text examines how in Hegel (via A. Kojève) self-consciousness is established from the transformation of nature, that is, from labor. It also sees the emergence of self-consciousness as linked to the possibility of seizing and containing contradictions, and that the perception of time is concomitant with the capture of the phenomena of variation and repetition. This is possible for consciousness as defined by Freud: “a sensory organ for the perception of psychic qualities.” The perception of pleasure and pain allows the apprehension of life. It also makes it possible to face the alternative that emerges from the inevitable experience of frustration, namely, evading the perception or altering its nature. Thus, it is a matter, here, of transforming the inner nature of the subject. The work, at this moment, is to think.

What people understand by “time” – if an equivalent to the english term exists at all – is always culturally embedded. How time is conceptualized depends strongly from each society’s mode of production and forms also a central part of its religious worldview. In this talk, Kohl compared the linear time concept of modern industrial societies to the time concepts of early agrarian, pastoral and hunter-gatherer societies to show the differences as well as some surprising similarities.

Tiago Quental - "The dynamics and drivers of biodiversity in geological time" The history of biodiversity is characterized by a recurrent extinction of species and by a continual replacement of different branches in the tree of life. This replacement dynamics is ultimately determined by changes in speciation and extinction rates. The fossil record offers an unprecedented opportunity to understand the deep time history of biodiversity because it directly preserves this unfolding dynamics. Quental presented how we can use the fossil record of mammals to discuss the history of biodiversity and the potential factors that might drive changes in speciation and extinction rates at a geological time scale. Luiz Gylvan Meira Filho - "Time scales of and climate change" Climate is defined as the statistics of the variables that describe the instantaneous state of the climate system (atmosphere, oceans and biosphere). The use of proxy variables allows us to retrace the history of the main climate variables as far back as 70 million years before present. A summary of our present knowledge were presented, showing variability of climate in all time scales.

In this conversation Buijs aimed to cover the mechanisms that our brain is using to synchronize our physiology to the requirements of the day. The importance of such synchronization for our health has been demonstrated in many different studies. The first task of our brain is that it needs to take care of itself, for that it has an elaborate system that provides it continuously with information about the state of our body. Naturally the state of energy in our body is of the utmost importance because our brain uses up to 20% of the available energy most in the form of glucose. Only if that is available in sufficient amounts then the brain can think of reproducing itself. Because the available energy depends for all organisms on the energy of the sun many systems have developed that take into account the day night cycle and thus the availability of food. This appears to be the main organizational principle in most organisms. Therefore we will see a very close association between time energy and physiology. Therefore time is important for the functioning temperature regulation, reproduction, metabolism, circulation and immune system. Therefore the mechanisms of this interweaving of time with these different physiological systems will be the topic of our conversation.

— por Aziz Salem — última modificação 18/09/2019 22:52Adjustment to temporal cycles and the dangers of disrupted biological rhythms. Organisms living on Earth are exposed to geographical cycles which require rhythmic adjustments in behavior and physiology in order to anticipate these cyclic changes. In this talk temporal cycles and their impact on individuals were discussed, as well as the mechanisms that allow temporal adaptation. Next, the relevance of a correct synchrony between the biological timing and the external cycles were discussed as a factor for health and wellbeing. Finally experimental models for temporal disruption were presented and the results obtained with such models indicating the loss of homeostasis and of behavioral adaptation.

Produto de um longo processo histórico, uma região geográfica (e nem tanto, pois inclui a América Central e um país e norte-americano), a América Latina foi adquirindo múltiplas conotações, associadas a projetos políticos, culturais e econômicos.
Trajetória dos Engenheiros no Brasil

Adaptação às Mudanças Climáticas em Cidades: Ações Contra a Seca na Austrália

A bióloga brasileira Silvia Serrao-Neumann, que mora e pesquisa há vários anos na Austrália, apresentou as medidas adotadas pela Região Metropolitana de Brisbane para enfrentar a Seca do Milênio e futuros eventos climáticos daquele tipo.

A natureza apresenta efeitos conflitantes em sistemas físicos, temperaturas muito altas, como era na época do Big Bang, ou muito baixas em sistemas de partículas como átomos. A temperatura mais baixa possível é de -273 graus negativos. Nenhum sistema físico pode chegar a esta temperatura. Mas quando se chega muito próximo a esta temperatura, verificou-se que sistemas de átomos condensam, formando o chamado “Condensado de Bose-Einstein”. Trata-se de um novo estado de matéria onde o sistema todo (por ex. 100.000.000,00 átomos) comporta-se como um só. Os mesmos sistemas físicos poderiam apresentar um comportamento ordenado onde se pode prever o futuro. Ao mesmo tempo, com mudança de variáveis, o sistema poderia apresentar um comportamento caótico, onde o futuro do sistema fica desconhecido. A versão quântica deste comportamento caótico é conhecida como caos quântico, “Quantum Chaos”. A primeira palestra discutiu o tema "Bose‐Hubbard Hamiltonian: Quantum Chaos Approach"
Mudanças Ambientais Globais, Planejamento e Políticas Públicas - 3º Mesa Redonda / Debate
— por Sergio R V Bernardo — última modificação 18/09/2019 22:40Diante dos crescentes impasses e considerando a necessidade de reconhecer a ‘sociedade civil’ e o ‘ambiente’ de forma não dualística, buscando um planejamento territorial e uma maior governança ambiental, surgem diversos atores governamentais e não governamentais com a prioridade de conjugar a pesquisa científica e intervenção política, de forma a cobrar maior representação da sociedade civil nos processos decisórios. A intervenção política destes está baseada em estratégias de monitoramento socioambiental. Baseados nas experiências destes atores sociais, esperamos como resultado deste evento (pensado em três eixos de discussão: mudanças ambientais globais, planejamento territorial e políticas públicas) uma melhor compreensão do processo que se dá desde a análise das questões socioambientais que demandam decisão até o jogo político entre os atores, a colaboração acadêmica entre universidades latino americanas que tratam do tema e, finalmente, na repercussão das ações consequentes destas decisões na gestão territorial, promovendo, assim, uma maior governança.
