As Vidas dos Artistas no Mundo Globalizado (Conferência Internacional) / The Lives of Artists in the Globalized World (International Conference)

A partir do século 16, as narrativas biográficas dos artistas serviram de modelo incontornável para o desenvolvimento da história da arte como disciplina.

Desde a publicação das obras de Ernst Kris e Otto Kurz, de Rudolf e Margot Wittkower, uma ampla bibliografia dedicou atenção às “vidas dos artistas”, destinadas a se tornar, ao longo do tempo, um gênero literário autônomo, dotado de características descritivas e fórmulas narrativas próprias, constantemente deslizando entre historiografia e literatura. Alguns tópicos frequentes cristalizaram-se como elementos constantes desses relatos: a predestinação do artista, a infância prodigiosa, a descoberta inesperada por um mestre, as relações com os modelos, o temperamento peculiar, as circunstâncias da morte.

As pesquisas que até agora se desenvolveram sobre o tema têm se concentrado quase exclusivamente nos contextos europeus, nos quais – de Vasari a Van Mander, de Palomino a Félibien – se formou o cânon narrativo do gênero. No entanto, muitos artistas fora da Europa, na medida em que desfrutavam de reconhecimento ao nível regional ou nacional, também foram tema de biografias e de imagens representando episódios de suas vidas.

A circulação e a tradução das biografias de artistas europeus certamente tiveram uma função importante para a difusão internacional dessas narrativas. Contudo, ainda é necessário investigar sobre a eventual existência de invariantes e / ou tradições autônomas nessas histórias, para além dos contextos europeu ou ocidental.

From the 16th century onwards, the narratives on the lives of artists served as an inescapable model for the development of art history as a discipline.

Since the publication of works such as those by Ernst Kris and Otto Kurz, as well as those by Rudolf and Margot Wittkower, an abundant bibliography has drawn attention to the particular character of the “lives of artists'', destined to become over time an autonomous literary genre, endowed with their own descriptive and narratives formulas—although constantly sliding between cultural history and literature. Some frequent topics are, in fact, responsible for crystalizing true myths in these narratives: the artist's predestination, the prodigious childhood, the unexpected discovery by a master, the relationships with the models, the particular temperament, the death’s circumstances.

Despite their profusion, the researches developed so far on the “lives of the artists” have been concentrated almost exclusively on European contexts, in which–from Vasari to Van Mander, from Palomino to Félibien – appeared the canonical narratives of this genre. Very little has been said about the construction of these “lives” outside Europe. And yet, many local artists used to enjoy recognition on a regional or national level, being also subject to biographies or images representing episodes of their lives. The diffusion and, eventually, translation of famous European artists’ biographies certainly had considerable importance for the international proliferation of these narratives. But it is still necessary to inquire about the eventual existence of invariants and/or autonomous traditions in these stories, beyond the European or Western contexts.
